Employee Spotlight: Jessie Johnson

Posted By Tyler Graves on September 14, 2015

Johnson_JessicaI’m pleased to announce Jessie Johnson as our September employee of the month!

We asked Jessie a few questions about herself so you could get to know her better.

What are your roles and responsibilities for clients of Wessler Engineering?

I am a Project Engineer (E.I.) for Wessler. I am technically in the Wastewater group, but I’m involved in a variety of projects and constantly learning new aspects of my industry. Wessler really allows me the freedom to be involved with whatever our clients need.

You have degrees in the fields of Engineering and Interior Design. What are some of the similarities you see between these two professions?

I think most people find it so surprising that I transitioned from one to the other, but there really are a lot of similarities: the design-bid-build process, problem-solving, creating a solution, communicating the design in a clear manner, to name a few. To design something on paper and then to see it come to life, (whether it be a hotel room or a sewer replacement) is really such a proud moment. I enjoy creating something for someone that hopefully improves his or her quality of life in some aspect.

You can give one object (the same object) to everyone in the world. What is it and why?

Water! CLEAN water. I remember us having this discussion in a class in college. When a community has clean water, everything else follows, and that community can thrive.

What's the most important lesson you have learned over the last year?

Well having my son (almost a year) has taught me so much. I am a very ‘Type A’ person: I love structure and schedules and to-do lists. All that goes out the window with a child. I am learning to let go a little bit of schedules and just enjoy the moment.

If you could have one new talent bestowed on you such that you perform it perfectly, what would it be?

Like many people, public speaking is not my favorite activity. I’d love to have someone wave a magic wand and make me great at it, but more realistically, practice makes perfect. I present with another Engineer at IWEA this year, so I’m working on it!

Name one thing you hope each of your clients knows about you.

I really enjoy what I do. Wessler has an awesome group of people who also really enjoy what they do, so I have some great mentors.

What is the best advice your mother gave to you that you will now pass on to Tucker? (Jessie is the mother of an 11-month-old son)

My mother has always emphasized kindness. There is a saying “The world is full of nice people. If you can’t find one, be one.” And she taught exactly that. I would love to pass that along to Tuck.

What does the Wessler way mean to you?

The Wessler way really is "More than a Project." I get to meet and know my clients. When I am working on a project, it’s not just for the City of Whosit or Whatever Town. It’s for Brian in Warsaw or Ted in Butler or Pat in Garrett or Adam in North Manchester or Craig in Angola. I love knowing the people and community behind the project.
