Employee Spotlight: Don Thompson

Written by Seth Morin | Dec 20, 2016 3:30:00 PM

Wessler is pleased to announce Don Thompson as our Employee of the Month! We asked Don a few questions about himself so you could get to know him better.

What are your roles and responsibilities for clients of Wessler Engineering?

I am a Senior Designer in the Wastewater Group. My main role is generating design drawings for our wastewater projects using AutoCAD and beginning, very recently, to use Revit. I assist the engineers in the layout of plant sites and building/equipment layouts.

Tell us one thing you want each of our clients to know about you.

I married my high school sweetheart and 43 years later we are still together and loving each other.

What does the "Wessler Way" mean to you?

Always have the clients best interest in mind. Give 100%. It is a team effort.

What are some important lessons you have learned while working at Wessler?

Be open to new ideas. Look forward and not back.

Outside of work, what are some of your favorite hobbies?

My only real hobby is photography.

What attracted you to this industry?

Before I moved into this field, I worked for a manufacturing facility in New Mexico. The company manufactured oil and gas production equipment so I was familiar with pipe and pipe fittings. When I moved to Indiana, I had two job offers, one of which was with a civil engineering firm creating drawings for wastewater and water facilities.  I figured pipe was pipe (it didn’t take me long to figure out that wasn’t correct) so I took the position with the civil engineering firm.

What are some of your favorite things to do with your children and grandchildren?

I enjoy any activity with my family, but just being around them is what I enjoy best.

You have been recognized for your photography work - what got you into photography? What are some of the pieces of work you have been recognized for?

When my twin granddaughters were born in 2000, digital photography was just taking off. I bought my first digital camera two days after they were born and began taking photos of them. I have always loved nature, so, at the same time, I began documenting my time out in nature. Several of my photographs have won awards, both locally and in southwest Florida where my wife and I love to vacation. I have had a few photographs published in Buckmasters Magazine, and several in the Sanibel-Captiva Nature Calendar.
