I’m pleased to announce Emily Nelson as our May employee of the month!

We asked Emily a few questions about herself so you could get to know her better.

What is your role and responsibility at Wessler Engineering?

I’m a project engineer in our stormwater group, but I work with several of the departments at Wessler in various ways. I’m a big stickler for organization and consistency, so I’ve been helping to update and standardize many of the tools and processes we use. I love teaching our newer engineers ways to simplify their work so we can all be more efficient.

Who was the first person you told about being named Employee of the Month and what did they say?

I told my mom. She said the competition is tough, but I’m still in the running to be her favorite child.

What correlations do you see between engineering and tap dancing?

I am a planner in all aspects of my life—engineering, dancing, or otherwise. I’m not an improvisational tap dancer, so my choreography takes planning just like engineering. And both give me a chance to express my creativity and ideas.

What’s the most important lesson you have learned over the last year?

No matter how much you plan, you can’t be prepared for everything—but that’s okay. So much has happened in my personal and professional life over the last year that I didn’t expect, but overall I’m just a better, wiser person because of it.

In 25 years, everything has gone your way--where are you and what are you doing?

I heard a news story not long ago about a woman who quit her job to sell ice cream on an island, so that sounds pretty good. But in all honesty, I love my job. In 25 years I hope to be here at Wessler but in more of a leadership role.

Name one thing you hope each of your clients knows about you?

I hope my clients know that they are the reason I love my job. Growing up, I never thought about where my water came from or where wastewater or stormwater disappeared to. I enjoy working with and getting to know the people who do such a great job running our utilities so that the public doesn’t have to think about those things daily.

How are you going to save the world?

Most likely with an Excel spreadsheet.

What does the Wessler Way mean to you?

The Wessler Way is client-centered engineering with integrity, and caring about doing things right. In my time here, I’ve learned to focus on making the client or end-user’s life easier. Sometimes the Wessler Way can be more work, but it is certainly worthwhile.
