What Is the State of Women in the Wastewater Industry?

Posted By Kate Ziino, P.E. on October 27, 2023

The following article was originally published in the Summer 2023 issue of Indiana Digester.

The fact that women represent 80% of the current IWEA Board recently caught my attention. As a woman who has been working as a wastewater treatment and collection design consultant since 1999, this is quite a change from my experiences when I first started working in the industry. I was curious to know if the perspectives of other women in this industry aligned with my own. I divided the wastewater industry into three groups (design/consulting, construction, and utility roles), and then reached out to women in those roles, with a range of experience levels, to discuss their views. Hopefully in doing so, you can identify with at least one perspective in this article.
