Top 19 Engineering Apps We Use Every Day

From scientific calculators to estimation tools designed specifically for wastewater professionals, these are some of the mobile apps and tools we use on the job.

1. Wessler App

Wessler Engineering  has a free mobile app available for android and iphone. The app is a great resource containing training webinars, resources, guides, whiteboard videos and contact information.  Keep checking in, because there is new information added all the time.

2.  Isco FlowCalc

Teledyne Isco has developed an iPhone or Android app that calculates flow rates in open channels and pipes. 

The app allows you to check performance or verify the configuration of flow meters. Flow conversions are provided for flumes, weirs, area velocity, or mannings equation. You can even save frequently used “favorites” including GPS information.

Rain for Rent’s RiteFlow is a mobile flow calculator. The app, for apple or android, includes a set of hydraulic estimation tools that water and wastewater professionals can use anywhere. The app includes a friction loss calculator, TDH calculator, Rain for Rent pump selector and gravity flow logger.

4. Water Chart

This app, created for a law firm in Utah, contains a calculator for common unit conversions. Water Chart includes a volume and flow calculator, length and area calculator, and reference charts for land and water rights. This free app is available on apple and android devices.

5. RealCalc

This is “androids most popular scientific calculator.” It’s designed to look, feel, and operate just like a hand-held scientific calculator. RealCalc is able to perform algebraic operations,  percentages, unit conversions, and much more. The pro-version offers even more features.

This android or apple app is a directory of contact information for those responsible for Indiana’s road infrastructure. City, Town and County contacts are available.  It enables you to search for contacts nearby using Google Maps. You can call, or email your contact directly from the app.

7. Google Earth

Google Earth is an Android app that allows you to see 3D images of any location on earth. You can also view locations with the street view function. The real time function allows you to find airplanes in flight, local hiking trails and more.

8. Chromecast

Chromecast is an Android app that allows you to broadcast your pictures or screen to a TV wirelessly.

9. Google Drive

Google drive for android, allows you to share your documents and files on all of your devices. The files in your drive are backed up safely, and you can invite others to share, edit, or view your files.

10. Google Maps

Google Maps is the default mapping system on android devices. It allows you to download map areas for offline viewing so you can use them when you are in areas without internet service.

11. Microsoft Outlook

Outlook is a free email app that helps you manage your email, calendar, and contacts easily within one app. It takes away the need to switch between several apps to get the job done.

12. Unit Converter

Unit converter is a simple, clean interface that allows you to easily access commonly used conversions.

Waze is a community-based traffic and navigation app. Using GPS, drivers in your area can share gas prices, road information, and traffic reports so that you make your commute less stressful.

14. NOAA Weather

This weather app uses public information from NOAA and the National Weather Service to provide forecasts, radar, and current weather conditions. The app uses GPS so the information is relevant to your location.

15. Red Cross First Aid

In construction, safety is the number one concern. This First Aid app from the American Red Cross gives you quick access to the information you need to common first aid emergencies. The app is fully integrated, and you can call 911 directly from the app.

16. ConvertPad

ConvertPad is an android app that converts any unit of measurement with an easy and intuitive interface. It also converts currency.

17. Magnifier

In addition to a flashlight app, the Magnifier makes reading tiny prints, such as serial numbers,  much easier! This app has on screen zoom and lighting controls to make your task even easier.

18. Where’s my Droid?

Where’s my Droid allows you to find your phone, even if the battery has already died. You can find your phone by using GPS, set a passcode protection to prevent theft, and turn up the ringer if your phone is on silent. If your battery is running low, the app will email you with the location of your phone so you will still be able to find it.

19. Excel

The Excel app allows you to view, edit, or save spreadsheets from your device. It works really well for tablets!
